10 Years of Benefits

September 1, 2019/in Events & Concerts, News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

A special thank you to my band, and entire team, for making our 10th Annual Show a sell out success. St. Mary’s was well received and everyone at the show had a blast… but in the end, the guys and and I had the biggest blast of all.  Save the date for December 5th, 2019 for next year’s benefit.

Singer/Songwriter Uses Her Music to Help Millions in Need

November 28, 2018/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

For more than two decades, San Anselmo musician Michelle Schmitt has used her talents to help others, from critically ill children to families struggling to make ends meet.

As a child of the 60s, social empathy is part of Michelle Schmitt’s DNA. The Marin musician donates the proceeds from her performances to local organizations such as ExtraFood.org and the SF-Marin Food Bank, which in turn has put food on the table for many Marin families in need.

How did you become interested in becoming a singer, and how long have you been doing it for?

I just turned 60 in September. When I think back, I’ve been singing my entire life. My dad bought me the record “Meet the Beatles” when I was very young — and that was it!

How long have you been using your work as a way to create positive social impact?

I’ve been doing this for the last 23 years, since I went back into the music world. I have been incredibly lucky and have worked very hard at everything I’ve ever done. It is my pleasure to make music that, in turn, has helped so many people. In the last 10 years of doing my benefit concerts, we have fed over 3.5 million people with the proceeds of ticket sales and from the sales of my music.

How did you become interested in getting involved in helping causes for social impact?

Ever since I was a young girl, I have always noticed that some people suffered while others had wonderful lives. It has always been a part of who I am to see what I can do to help others. Growing up in the 1960s and 70s made being socially conscious as normal as breathing. Any way I can alleviate suffering in the world, both in small ways and in significant ones, makes me feel very lucky and happy.

What causes are you most passionate about supporting and what are the kinds of issues they tackle?

I have always been interested in getting food to people in need, as well as clothing and shelter. I have also been very involved in helping people suffering from addiction to alcohol and drugs. Another area of importance to me is being involved with youth at risk. Being the mother of two sons, every time I see a young person living on the streets, I feel a deep desire to do what I can to help them.

Do you have any stories about how your work has had positive impact?

I think that every story I would tell would involve all the amazing people who have come to my shows and bought my music throughout the last 20 years. It is these people who have helped feed over 3.5 million people and have brought smiles to the faces of so many sick young children. One person can make a difference, but a gathering of large number of people with the same heart and intentions as me has made this happen. Love and empathy, which is positive already, is what joins us together, but when one thinks of what we have collectively done, it is astounding and beyond anything I could ever have dreamed of when I first had the idea of donating all the proceeds of my music to charitable causes.

Is there anything else you want to share?

Go to michelleschmitt.com to keep up with the plans I have in 2019.

Marin Magazine Q&A with Michelle Schmitt

November 21, 2017/in Events & Concerts, News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

The San Anselmo singer/songwriter is back December 7 at the Throckmorton Theatre for her ninth annual charity benefit. Audiences love her soulful vocals and the fact that 100 percent of proceeds go to ExtraFood.org.

BY JIM WOOD

What first drew you to ExtraFood Marin, and how long have you been contributing to its efforts?

My best friend, Heidi Krahling, who owns Insalata’s and Marinitas in San Anselmo, introduced me to ExtraFood because of my interest in giving back and my ability to raise money for good causes. I’d been involved with Meals on Wheels San Francisco for a long time, but wanted to do something in my own community. That was five years ago.

Precisely what is it that you do for them? And what do you get out of it?

Nine years ago, I started a benefit concert to celebrate my turning 50 years old in a positive way. Getting food to people in need seemed like a good thing to do. Since then, 100 percent of all proceeds from my music go to assist various organizations in San Francisco and Marin that help the homeless, the LGBTQ community, food banks, anti-bullying organizations and various drug rehabilitation programs. Why do I do it? It makes me happy.

Do you perform in benefits outside of Marin?

Next year, I’ll do a widely publicized concert at Eglise Saint-Eustache, one of only two churches in Paris, France, that welcomed people suffering during the early days of the AIDS epidemic. This amazing church also started a soup kitchen that is still active today. This concert, and my upcoming record St. Mary’s, will be part of my 60th birthday.

What inspires or motivates you to do these concerts?

I grew up in Detroit in a big family and, as the oldest, I always felt a strong sense of responsibility. While raising my sons around a lot of affluence here in Marin, I taught them that economic grace comes with responsibility. We do it in our family business, BMW of San Francisco, and we do it in our family life. I love grand gestures that help people, but all acts of kindness matter. My husband of 40 years, two sons, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, granddaughter and future grandson all remind me every day of how lucky I am. I know that all the gifts I have been given are for a reason, and it is my job to put them back out into the world in whatever way I can.

Feed the hungry with a benefit concert

ExtraFood.org might be amusingly considered Marin County’s “Robin Hood of Food.” The non-profit weekly “rescues” tons of excess food from upscale restaurants and supermarkets and distributes it to those in need. Volunteers respond when excess food, prepared or ready for cooking, is available for the taking. They pick up from restaurants, caterers, bakeries, and markets and quickly deliver it to senior centers, homeless shelters, and other needy and hungry organizations.

ExtraFood.org has a fundraising champion with Bay Area singer/songwriter Michelle Schmitt. Schmitt will perform a benefit concert with her band on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. Come rock with the music and work off those Thanksgiving calories.

Celebrity Chef Heidi Krahling, of San Anselmo’s Insalata’s Restaurant, serves on the ExtraFood.org board and is thrilled with her years supporting the program. Krahling says “No waste, no hunger, that’s where we’re going!” Krahling will cater a pre-concert reception for VIP ticket holders.

PacificSun: Michelle Schmitt shares gratitude through music

November 2, 2016/in Events & Concerts, News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

2016-pac-sun-hatSinger, songwriter and Marin County resident Michelle Schmitt is a believer in giving back. Schmitt’s annual holiday concert on the first Thursday of December is a staple of the season, and with the release of her newest holiday album, Another Christmas Story, she’s expanding her charitable efforts and donating 100 percent of album sales and concert tickets to the Marin-based nonprofit ExtraFood. She performs on December 3 at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley.

Schmitt credits her father for introducing her to holiday music. “He was a huge inspiration for me,” she says. “He was kind and patient, and he loved holiday music. We learned every song.”

Born and raised in Detroit, Schmitt also grew up on the rock ’n’ roll of bands like MC5, as well as folk rock like Crosby, Stills & Nash and Joni Mitchell. She has been playing music since she was 12 years old. “I think it just became part of my cellular makeup,” she says.

Schmitt moved to California in 1977 and briefly sang alongside Norton Buffalo and others. She stopped performing to raise two sons. Fast forward 20 years, and Schmitt once again found herself drawn into music in the early 2000s.

“I decided to make a small holiday album as a way to raise funds for St.Vincent’s School for Boys in Marinwood,” she says. The album eventually found its way to music manager Robert Hayes, owner of San Jose’s Sound Management Inc., who offered her a recording contract.

Feeding the Soul and Stomach – Annual concert benefits Marin’s Meals on Wheels

November 17, 2013/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

By Cari Lynn Pace | Originally posted on Novato Advance

novato-advanceSan Anselmo’s Michelle Schmitt can’t stop singing, writing or raising money for Meals on Wheels, the oldest and largest national organization that represents community-based senior nutrition programs.

This dynamo blends her freewheeling spirit and classy persona with a strong personal sense of responsibility. She and her husband Henry raised their two sons in Marin, privileged and well-fed. Schmitt knew she wanted to give back to the community, using music as her method.

For five years running Schmitt has headlined an annual fundraising concert for Meals on Wheels and other local charities. Her talents and those of her remarkable band are presenting a one-night-only benefit for the organization at the new San Francisco Jazz Center at 201 Franklin St. in San Francisco on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

Featured musicians include Ricky Fataar on drums, George Marinelli on guitar, Drew Zingg and Michael Bluestein joining in on keyboards and Marc Levine with a spectacular bass. Added to this year’s star-studded lineup are Anton Patzner on violin and Lewis Patzner on cello. These seasoned and smooth musicians have their roots in performances with Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart and Boz Skaggs.

Schmitt has a sultry and indefinable voice — part soul, part rock, part twang and all enticing. Her earthy vocals and intelligent lyrics ooze soulful love and longing. Schmitt will release her ninth album, “Messages,” on the night of the concert. It features lush orchestral arrangements, which incorporate a blend of rock, Americana and a hint of Middle Eastern sounds that are the background for Michelle’s original songs and lyrics.

Schmitt wouldn’t think of curbing her philanthropic drive any more than she would slow down her music talents.

“At the end of the day it is important to me to know that I have impacted my community in a positive meaningful way,” Schmitt said. “I can’t think of a better way to kick off the holiday season than a concert where 100 percent of the proceeds go to such vulnerable populations – homebound seniors.”

Meals on Wheels San Francisco Executive Director Ashley McCumber enthuses agreed.

“The holidays would not be the same without Michelle’s benefit concert,” McCumber said. “Her longtime support of the organization is essential and touches so many lives every day. As the baby boomers continue to age, our services are more important than ever. The proceeds from this event will provide thousands of meals to homebound seniors.”

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $20. Messages performed live at the Passage du Grand Cerf at lunchtime in Paris

November 9, 2013/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

Title song from my new record “Messages” shot in Paris at the Passage Du Grand Cerf at lunch hour. Thanks to my art director, Molly Tuttle, who sprung it on me when we walked in for what, I thought, was a photo shoot. The first thing we saw when we walked in was a beautiful Parisian flower shop called MESSAGES. We took it as a sign!  Filmed by Danielle Rubi-Dentzel on an iPhone 5.

Michelle and HSR on Stark Insider TV (VIDEO)

November 8, 2013/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

In this episode of Stark Insider TV, Loni Stark visits the studio of musician Michelle Schmitt. Watch as they discuss the creative process, using music as an outlet for sorrow and grief, and the trials and tribulations of making it in an unapologetic industry.

“I’m so grateful. Because a lot of people don’t have the chance. I did music as a young person. Moved to California. Did the mom thing. And thought that was a part of my life that was no longer going to be there. And it’s [her music career] just started.”

It’s an understatement to suggest singer-songwriter Michelle Schmitt is in the midst of a creative renaissance. Music careers like hers are not supposed to happen like this. Or so goes the conventional wisdom. In a world of Justin Biebers and Miley Cyrus’, she’s turned the teen-star phenomena on its ear. The new formula: Start a family first, and then bootstrap your music career.

New studios, new record on the way!

June 28, 2013/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

Happy Summer! My team at both Harrison Street Records in San Francisco and Pine Mountain Studio were busy this winter and spring overseeing the re-building of the studios from the ground up. Designed by Wes Lachot of Durham, North Carolina, built by Kerr Construction – Marin County and wired by Steve Viellux (Skywalker Ranch), these studios are beyond anything I could have imagined. The band will meet at Pine Mountain Studio in Alexander Valley this summer to work on my next record “Messages” which will debut at my annual Meals on Wheels-San Francisco benefit concert.

Harrison Street Records & Pine Mountain Studio Update

September 17, 2012/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

Michael Gray, our studio manager and lead engineer, joins Paul Tyler and Aaron Burnham as we expand both studios. Michelle and her team of engineers also work at her state of the art recording studio in Alexander Valley called Pine Mountain Studio. Located in Northern California, Michelle and her band enjoy the benefits of getting away from it all and focusing solely on the music. It’s a recipe for more amazing music.

The renowned acoustician and recording studio designer Wes Lachot, has flown out from Chapel Hill, North Carolina and spent time with Michelle, Ricky Fataar and their engineer Michael Gray, and has drawn up plans for full re-designs of HSR and Pine Mountain Studio.  This is very exciting for all of the many people who will be recording music at both studios. Check out Wes’s website www.weslachot.com to see the spectacular work he has done.  With over twenty years experience as a recording engineer/producer, Wes is bringing us his wide range of practical knowledge and insight. The control rooms he designs and builds are known for their musically accurate acoustics, and are used for critical mixing by well-known producers and mixers. Jeff Kerr Construction from Marin County is working with Wes’s team to get these studios up and running. HSR in San Francisco has been taken down to the studs and will be completed mid November just in time for rehearsals for Michelle’s annual Meals on Wheels SF benefit concert in December and Pine Mountain Studio will be completely gutted, expanded and done by our August recording session. New equipment has been purchased and we will be ready to roll soon…Stay tuned.

Music: Do you hear what I hear?

December 3, 2009/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

2009-pac-sun-do-you-hear-what-i-hearNo Virginia, not all holiday music is lousy… Article by Greg Cahill of the PacificSun,  Remembrances of the childhood sounds and smells of the holiday season–Grandma baking cookies and Dad singing his favorite Christmas songs–inspired Bay Area singer and songwriter Michelle Schmitt to record Christmas on Pine Mountain, a heartfelt mix of originals and country-inflected classic carols. But there’s nothing sugary about these songs.

Mom Finds Second Life Singing

November 26, 2009/in News & Media/by MichelleSchmitt

Marinscope Newspapers

For many moms, once their kids head off to college it’s time to pick up a hobby and start a new life. For San Anselmo mom Michelle Schmitt, that went a step further than book clubs or knitting circles.

Schmitt, who has been involved in music since she was 12, has found a second life as a singer, with a wealth of CDs of what she calls “chick music” and her own studios in both San Francisco and Alexander Valley in Sonoma.

“My whole musical life just came alive again,” said Schmitt.
